Asking for help a little earlier

Coping Strategies

I used to wait until I was already overwhelmed before I told anyone I was struggling. By then, even a simple conversation felt like too much to start.

Lately I'm trying something different: asking a little earlier, when things are just starting to feel heavy. Not a big announcement, just a short message to a friend — 'I'm having a hard week, can we talk for a bit?' or 'Could you help me think this through?'

Most of the time, people are glad to be asked. It gives them a clear, small way to show up, instead of guessing that something is wrong.

If asking feels hard for you, you're not alone in that. What makes it easier — or harder — for you to reach out? Is there one small, early ask you could try this week?
