CupTalks is not emergency care
CupTalks is not emergency care. If you or someone else may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or a crisis hotline now. In the United States, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
What peer support can do
- Offer listening, encouragement, shared experience, and practical coping ideas.
- Help a person feel less alone while they decide next steps.
- Point toward trusted resources, crisis lines, or professional care when needed.
- Create a respectful place to talk without pressure or promises.
What peer support cannot do
- Provide diagnosis, psychotherapy, treatment plans, medication advice, or emergency intervention.
- Replace a licensed clinician, crisis responder, attorney, or other qualified professional.
- Guarantee outcomes or claim that one method will work for everyone.
- Handle situations where someone may be in immediate danger.
How helpers should frame support
Helpers should speak from lived experience, training, and personal limits. A good helper asks what kind of support would help most, avoids diagnosis, encourages professional care when appropriate, and respects the other person's pace.
