Is this anxiety or is something actually wrong with me?

Anxiety & Worry

Can I say something weird?

I've been having chest pains for like three weeks. And I honestly don't know if it's my heart or if it's just... me. My brain being anxious about something.

The frustrating part is I don't even fully know what the something is. My mom's health, maybe. Work. This feeling like I'm behind in my life somehow, even though I couldn't tell you what I'm behind on.

Typing this out loud feels stupid. But I don't know who else to ask.

It's not stupid. I had this exact thing a couple years ago. Thought I was having a heart attack. Twice. Went to the ER both times.

Turned out to be panic attacks. The doctor actually said my heart was "annoyingly healthy," which somehow made me feel worse — like I'd failed a test I didn't know I was taking.

Anyway. You're not alone in this. Just wanted to say that first.

It doesn't make it less real. It just means the danger is coming from inside instead of outside. Which honestly might be worse, because you can't leave the room to get away from it.

Sending you a hug through the screen 🤍

Okay honest question and please don't take this the wrong way — I don't really get anxiety like this. I get stressed, sure, but not chest-pain-can't-breathe stuff.

Is it weird that I don't get it? Genuinely asking, not trying to dismiss anyone.

Not weird at all. Everyone's wiring is different. You're not broken for not having it, and she's not broken for having it. Nervous systems just run different software.

You didn't! Honestly it's kind of nice having someone in the thread who isn't a case study for once 😂

Late to this thread but — I went to three different doctors last year for stomach pain. Turned out to be stress. My body was basically screaming at me because I wouldn't let myself feel anything out loud.

I'm the friend who says "I'm fine" the most. Turns out my stomach was the one keeping score the whole time.

"my stomach was keeping score" — okay that line just wrecked me a little

that actually clicked something for me. Maybe that's what this is — my body keeping score on something I haven't said out loud yet.

I think... I'm scared my mom is declining faster than she's telling me. And some part of me has known for a while and just hasn't wanted to know.

First time typing that anywhere.

You don't have to solve it today. You just said it. That's already something.

For what it's worth — get the chest thing checked anyway. Not instead of the other stuff, in addition to it. Belt and suspenders.
