New study expands the genetic picture of OCD and tic disorders

A Nature Neuroscience study published September 1 analyzed whole-exome sequencing data from 3,964 people with obsessive-compulsive disorder, chronic tic disorders, or both. Researchers identified 36 high-confidence risk genes and found biological overlap between the conditions and other neurodevelopmental conditions.

Why it matters: these findings give researchers more specific pathways to investigate. They are not a diagnostic test, do not show that a person will develop either condition, and do not create an immediate new treatment. Replication and substantial laboratory and clinical research must come first.

I appreciate the distinction between a risk gene and a diagnosis. Population-level associations can be meaningful science without predicting one person’s future.
