Jewel Kicks Off Fifth Annual #NotAloneChallenge on World Mental Health Day
Singer Jewel launched her fifth-annual #NotAloneChallenge on World Mental Health Day (Saturday, Oct. 10), inviting people to share something or someone that has supported their mental health — a friend, pet, book, activity, or comforting object. The movement has raised over $3 million for her Inspiring Children Foundation and aims to make mental health support feel practical and accessible. Jewel has spoken openly about her own past experiences with homelessness and anxiety.

A new study published October 6 in the journal Psychological Medicine, based on nearly 6,800 respondents from the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, found that people with depression who used psilocybin in the past year sought therapy, treatment, and prescription antidepressants at about the same rate as non-users. However, psilocybin users were more likely to feel their mental health needs were not being met (52% vs. 34%). Researchers from UC San Diego cautioned that psilocybin-assisted therapy has only shown effectiveness with structured dosing and professional guidance.

A new Child Mind Institute survey of 1,000 U.S. teens aged 14–17, released October 7 ahead of World Mental Health Day, found that 47% reported moderate to severe loneliness even as the most digitally connected generation. Teens with a stronger sense of belonging reported better mental health, with 88% saying in-person time with family, friends, and school communities is essential for feeling connected.
