Beyond Busyness: Time Pressure, Schedule Control, and Student Mental Health

Beyond Busyness: Time Pressure, Schedule Control, and Student Mental Health

A full calendar is not the same as a heavy burden. In a recent survey of 646 undergraduates, fewer uncommitted hours were linked to lower depressive symptoms, while greater perceived time pressure was linked to higher anxiety and depression. This Perspective argues that universities should assess time demands, perceived pressure, and schedule control separately. It weighs five explanations for the apparent benefits of busyness, separates mindfulness traits from training, and offers three testable propositions for matching support to the true source of student strain.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia: Mechanisms, Efficacy, and an Evidence-Based Framework for Guided Self-Implementation

cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the recommended first-line treatment for chronic insomnia, yet few people can reach a trained clinician. This review explains how CBT-I works by targeting the habits and beliefs that keep poor sleep going, summarizes the evidence for each component and for self-help and digital formats, and offers a step-by-step framework for guided self-implementation. It covers screening, sleep diaries, sleep restriction rules, stimulus control, adherence strategies, and clear signs that professional care is needed. Safety is emphasized throughout.
